Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a violent crime committed in the context of an intimate relationship. This includes intentionally inflicting unlawful physical force against a family member, spouse, dating partner, or housemate. If you plead guilty to this charge you need to be aware that Domestic Violence is an enhanceable offense. This means the State will use this conviction, and any other prior conviction from this or any other state which prohibits the same or similar conduct, to enhance the penalty for any subsequent offense. So, the penalties increase with every subsequent domestic violence conviction that occurs within 7 years of the previous conviction. Defendants also need to know that if they are convicted of domestic violence, that they will be prohibited from owning firearms and that possessing firearms after conviction will result in a felony charge. Hire an attorney that knows how you can complete all of these requirements and can recommend options that can expedite the process.
